Our friend, llbear, needs a helping hand and some love

Llbear has not been around this site for awhile, largely because his health makes it difficult to be on the computer for any length of time.  But many people will remember his presence here with great fondness and respect.  Being a disabled Viet Nam Veteran, he was always supportive of Veterans and their issues — and he lent a helping hand to many individuals, as well.

That’s llbear in the back — from left to right, my sister winglion, Angela Marx, llbear, and Angela’s daughter.  This was taken at the Portland VA Hospital where we were delivering quilts and teddy bears.

Llbear is a brittle diabetic.  He has a host of medical problems stemming from this — his mobility is limited, he sometimes falls, and he is in constant pain.  The focus of his life, the thing that really centers him, is his love for two little dogs that he inherited from his late father.  Otis and Andy are little Jack Russell mixes and they are llbear’s constant companions.

Otis is suddenly very sick with perotinitus. The poor little dog can’t move his rear legs and is suffering.  Llbear has taken him to the vet every day for the last three days and will bring him there again this evening.  Although he has a wellness plan in place for the little guy, vet visits can add up to steep bills, as we pet owners all know.  Llbear has only the income from his disability and payday is a ways away.  I know he is in despair that he may not be able to provide for what Otis needs.  And the worry from this — financial worry and the heartache that Otis may need to be put down — is having a very negative effect on llbear’s blood sugar.

How you can help

1.  If you can donate toward Otis’ care, llbear’s email for PayPal is bearonkingsgate AT gmail DOT com

2.  Send loving thoughts to llbear and Otis.  This matters more than I can express!

3.  If you are an old friend of llbear’s, give him a call.  I think he is feeling pretty isolated and a loving ear will mean a lot.

A big bear hug to you all — and thank you for thinking of this dear friend.

UPDATE

I just had sad news in an email from llbear.  Otis couldn’t poop or pee this evening, even with help, holding his legs.  He wrote about the vet visit:

The doctor took him in back, took an additional x-ray and concluded that he was in significant pain and, if cancerous, would not survive surgery. I had to let him go.

Understandably, llbear is devastated and exhausted.  I plan to talk with him tomorrow.  He is grateful for the financial help and the kind thoughts that were sent tonight.

And I thank you, too.

Sunday update

Llbear is still having a hard time, emotionally.  He tells me he is having trouble concentrating enough to construct a diary to tell everyone how appreciative he is.  He has some pictures of Otis he wants to share with you all, too.  Things are still very raw.  But in another day or so he hopes to post his thank you.  In the meantime, please know that he is deeply touched by your love and concern.
